Lunch Meetings


Our monthly luncheon meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month, September through November and January through April at Golden Corral in Morehead City, with speakers from the writing world.  Prior speakers have included NC writers, agents, writing program faculty, journalists and more.  Buffet lunch begins at 11:15 a.m. with presentations beginning at 12:00.

Our February meeting features Sondra Reed.  Sondra is a local writer who will speak to our members and guests on GHOSTWRITING 101.  This is a new topic for us and should be very interesting.  Reed as written two books for history professor Billy Yeargin and the History Press.  Please contact Debbi Kawecki at 252-838-6437 if you have any questions.   


 

Our meeting will be at the usual time and place: the Golden Corral in Morehead City on January 10 at 11:30 a.m.

November 8: Peter Makuck, poet, essayist and fiction writer, read selections of his poetry and talked about the craft of writing short stories.He teaches at East Carolina University and has authored five books of poetry and two collections of short stories.

October 11: Joan Carris, writer, teacher, reviewer, and columnist spoke to our writers on her experiences and shared her wisdom with CarteretWriters, discussing the differences between writing for children and writing for adults.

September 13:Terri Van Sickle presented a workshop-type talk on writing elements. She is the Associate Director of the Tar River Writing Project at East Carolina University, Contributing Writer for Crystal Coast Parent magazine, and Adjunct Instructor at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC. 

April 2011 Speaker

New Bern author and publisher Skip Crayton explained how showing rather than telling a story provides more impact.  He also led the group in a brief writing exercise illustrating his points. 

 

March 2011

Author and teacher Dr. J. T. Garrett visited with Carteret Writers on March 8. Dr. Garrett discusse the philosophy of his books, you may begin to see yourself and others in a different way. A member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from North Carolina, Dr. Garrett has been a student and teacher of Indian medicine for over forty years. His published books include Meditations with the Cherokee, Medicine of the Cherokee: The Way of Right Relationship, The Cherokee Herbal, and The Cherokee Full Circle.

 

 

February 2011 

A.J. Reimann, local publisher, discussed how he became a small press publisher, his book binding methods compared to larger presses, and what he likes authors to do or what he can do for authors as far as typesetting, formatting, covers, etc

 January 2011  

Peter Makuck was scheduled to read from his poetry and talk about the craft of writing short stories.  This meeting was cancelled due to weather. 

 

December 2010

Literary agent Janet Benrey spoke on how to get an agent, why you want one, and what to watch out for. As a published writer, publishing company director and more, she had insights for all writers.  She also spoke on e-publishing.
