Our Judges


Fiction:           Judges Rick and Marcie Carroll are both published authors, owners of a small press, and former owners of the Rocking Chair bookstore.  

 

 Flash Fiction:     Judged by Eryn Kawecki who earned a degree cum laude in English literature from Christopher Newport University in Newport News and is a member of their English honor society. Besides working as a journalist, she has written major papers discussing Sancho Panza's role as a hero in Don Quixote, music as a theme in Jane Austen's work, and the theme of chocolate in the film Chocolat.

  

Writing for Children:      Judge Kelley Maroules has a degree in English literature and over 20 years experience working in her family's Emerald Isle Bookstore which has a large children's section. For the past 10 years, she has written reviews covering various genres, mostly fiction.

 

Poetry:     Judge Lavonne Adams is MFA coordinator at UNC Wilmington, the author of Through the Glorieta Pass (2007 Pearl Poetry Prize), and two poetry chapbooks. Her poetry has  appeared in over fifty additional publications.

 

Judge Ashley Shivar is a Teaching Assistant in UNC Wilmington's Creative Writing Department, and co-coordinator of the Writers in Action program (UNCW outreach.)

 

 Nonfiction:     Judge Tim Bass is a lecturer in the Creative Writing program at UNC Wilmington, the BFA coordinator, and the Outreach program coordinator. His areas of interest are in creative nonfiction and fiction.
